Schneider Electric has recently agreed to acquire Boston-based software company PTC for $22.6 billion. This deal comes at a time when energy demand has surged due to the emergence of artificial intelligence, and global energy infrastructure is facing serious challenges.
Infrastructure Challenges in the Age of Artificial Intelligence
The increase in energy demand driven by the age of artificial intelligence has put significant pressure on global energy infrastructure. Energy production capacities, especially in the field of clean energy, are far from meeting the projected energy consumption of data centers in the coming years. Currently, energy networks and transmission lines worldwide are so small and outdated that they cannot meet the growing needs of the expanding population.

Moving Towards Clean Energy and Electrification
Countries are striving to increase energy production capacities, limit greenhouse gas emissions, and enhance energy security. Particularly in Europe, policymakers are working to keep pace with the rapid digitalization of energy networks to prevent potential disasters. However, in Southeast Asia, essential clean energy projects have been stalled due to network capacity shortages and maintenance delays.
Companies and engineers are working to respond to the energy demand driven by artificial intelligence using existing technologies and additional capacities that are currently underutilized. In this regard, Schneider Electric's CEO, Ruben Yaz, has stated that "there is an opportunity to further leverage existing assets."
Reports suggest that the acquisition of PTC could be Schneider Electric's largest purchase, and if the deal goes through, the company could contribute to the development of new solutions in energy and electrification. Additionally, the need to improve current infrastructure and respond to the increasing energy demand from data centers and industrial electrification creates new opportunities for engineering and technology companies.
