Saudi Arabia has discovered 110 million tons of uranium-containing ore in the Medina region. This discovery, recently announced by Saudi Energy Minister Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman at the International Atomic Energy Agency's public conference in Vienna, could be considered a key advancement in the country's plans to develop its domestic nuclear energy industry.
Details of the Discovery and Geological Assessments
Geological surveys indicate high concentrations of uranium in the Medina region. However, the amount of extractable uranium depends on the quality of the ore, geology, and extraction economics. In general, 110 million tons of uranium-containing ore does not mean that Saudi Arabia has obtained 110 million tons of uranium. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) also warns that the presence of identified uranium does not necessarily mean commercially recoverable resources.

Strategic Importance of the Discovery and Nuclear Plans
This discovery comes at a time when Saudi Arabia is rapidly advancing to introduce nuclear energy into its energy mix. In July, Saudi Arabia and the United States signed a historic agreement on civilian nuclear cooperation that provides the necessary legal framework for American companies to supply nuclear technology and equipment to Saudi Arabia. The U.S. Department of Energy has described this agreement as a foundation for a multi-billion dollar nuclear partnership over the decades.
Saudi Arabia currently has no uranium production and historically lacks an industry for domestic uranium enrichment. Prince Abdulaziz clearly emphasized that the country's nuclear ambitions are entirely peaceful and will be transparently pursued in cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency. This announcement also reflects Saudi Arabia's broader efforts to transform mineral resources into one of its economic pillars.
Saudi Arabia is currently the second-largest exporter of phosphate fertilizers in the world and is increasingly seeking critical minerals and rare elements. For Riyadh, the development of domestic uranium resources could ultimately be another part of this strategy to supply the fuel for the country's nuclear reactors using Saudi minerals.
