On Tuesday, Russia announced that diplomatic negotiations regarding Turkey's proposed plan for the safe passage of grain through the Black Sea are ongoing. Meanwhile, Moscow is looking to establish alternative export routes for its grain shipments.

Confirmation of Ongoing Negotiations

Dmitry Peskov, the Kremlin spokesperson, confirmed that further diplomatic contacts regarding Turkey's initiative have taken place. He added that Russia is working on creating alternative routes for its grain exports in the meantime.

In recent months, Russia and Ukraine have conducted more attacks on each other's grain ships in the Black Sea. These actions have led to an increase in global grain prices.

Black Sea Grain Initiative

Turkey and the United Nations signed the Black Sea Grain Initiative in July 2022 to facilitate the safe export of Ukrainian grain amid ongoing conflicts. This agreement allows Ukraine to send its grain to the global market. However, Russia exited this agreement in 2023, citing existing barriers to its food and fertilizer exports as the reason for its withdrawal.

The grain fields in Ukraine and Russia are considered two main sources of grain production in the world. According to statistics, Ukraine alone exported about 33 million tons of grain in 2021, including wheat, corn, and barley.

Given the ongoing tensions, international observers are concerned that the current situation may have further impacts on global food prices. Meanwhile, Russia is exploring new options to meet its domestic and export needs.
