Maersk reported on the status of its maritime transport service capacity in the Atlantic and Mediterranean in October 2026. The report indicates that transport capacity from Northern Europe to North America is gradually returning to normal, but available space in the market remains limited, and customers must book at least three weeks in advance of shipping cargo.
Status of Capacity in the Atlantic
According to forecasts, the TA2 route will quickly fill up with increasing cargo volumes, leading to space constraints for the Port of Saint John and the potential for the Port of Miami to be fully booked in some weeks. Additionally, capacity on the East Coast of Canada will remain limited throughout October due to low water levels. Therefore, it is recommended that customers contact Maersk representatives three weeks prior to shipping cargo.

Status of Services in the Mediterranean
In the Mediterranean region, available space across all services is facing limitations, and draft restrictions continue at the ports of Livorno and Salerno in Italy. Additionally, registration for transport from the Mediterranean to Houston has opened with a minimum three-week wait time, while other Mediterranean routes require at least two weeks. If your cargo is being shipped from Eastern Mediterranean or Central and Southeastern Europe, you should contact your local Maersk team to confirm equipment.
Status of Capacity in the Pacific
On the other hand, demand from Asia to North America remains high, and maritime delays due to weather conditions and storms have impacted schedules. During this season, transport capacity is expected to remain limited throughout October. Maersk's collaboration with Hapag-Lloyd, named Gemini Cooperation, has canceled two trips from TP8 and TP12 due to the Golden Week holidays, which may affect cargo arrivals in North America in mid to late October.
Changes in Services and Customs Tariffs
Effective November 1, 2026, an additional peak season charge for the Mediterranean will be implemented, amounting to $250 for each dry or refrigerated container and $220 for Syria. Additionally, starting September 18, 2026, the U.S. Customs will invalidate the Importer of Record (IOR) number for importers and brokers who provide incorrect identity information. These changes increase the need for accuracy in completing import-related forms.
Finally, Maersk advises customers shipping cargo from any African origin in the fourth quarter to contact the company's representatives to secure space and scheduling.
