The Jackdaw gas field, located 150 miles east of Aberdeen in the North Sea, has been reaffirmed after years of legal disputes with environmental activists. The UK government has issued an official permit for this gas field, stating that gas is expected to be supplied to the UK by the end of this month. This project was first approved in 2022, but was delayed due to successful legal challenges by environmental activists regarding its environmental impacts.
Details of the Reconfirmation
Miatta Fahnbulleh, the UK Energy Minister, stated in a press release: "After a thorough review of all relevant factors, I have agreed that the regulator can grant permission for gas production at Jackdaw." She also added that this gas field will soon begin supplying gas to the UK and could help enhance the country's energy security. Fahnbulleh emphasized that this gas field will assist in reducing reliance on imported fuels with higher greenhouse gas emissions.
Economic and Environmental Impacts
According to information provided by the field's developer, Adura, Jackdaw is expected to supply up to 6% of the UK's gas production at peak output. However, environmental advocacy groups such as Uplift have predicted that this amount will only equate to 2% of the country's total gas demand. Meanwhile, the UK Labour Party has stated that the reaffirmation of this project will not violate their election pledge to end new oil and gas licenses, as the initial permit was issued before they took power in 2024.
Fahnbulleh has emphasized that the decision made is consistent with legal commitments related to climate change, and the Labour Party is determined to end new licenses for oil and gas and achieve net zero by 2050. Additionally, while the approval of the Jackdaw project has been clearly announced, the status of the Rosebank oil field, the largest undeveloped oil field in the UK, remains suspended.
The Rosebank field, located about 80 miles northwest of Shetland, is expected to produce gas and primarily oil. Last year, the Edinburgh High Court ruled that the approvals for the Jackdaw and Rosebank fields were illegal due to a failure to consider the environmental impacts of burning the extracted oil and gas.
