Companies operating in the Permian oil field achieved significant results in the second quarter of 2023 despite challenges from negative gas prices. This field, recognized as one of the largest oil resources in the United States, managed to improve its performance by adopting appropriate measures while producers were forced to pay buyers due to low gas prices.

Performance of Oil Companies and Predictions

The company Permian Resources Corporation reported a daily production of 198,071 barrels of oil, generating a positive cash flow of $751 million in this quarter. The company also forecasts that it will increase its oil production to over 200,000 barrels per day in the second half of the year, while its average oil price in the second quarter was $85.37 per barrel.

In this context, Kinetik Holdings Inc. also recorded positive results by processing 1.74 billion cubic feet of gas per day and achieving an adjusted EBITDA of $280.8 million. The company expects to increase its processing capacity to 2.7 billion cubic feet per day by 2028.

Challenges and Solutions

While gas prices at the Waha hub averaged negative $3.14 per million BTU in the second quarter, companies turned to reducing production from wells with high gas-to-oil ratios. This reduction led to about a 20 percent decrease in gas production compared to the first quarter. Additionally, Kodiak Gas Services Inc. continues to forecast an increase in production and revenue in the electric power sector despite losing $87.5 million in free cash flow.

Predictions from the U.S. Energy Information Administration indicate that domestic crude oil production will rise from 13.9 million barrels per day this year to 14.3 million barrels per day by 2027. These predictions also suggest constraints on oil flows from the Middle East in the fourth quarter of this year.
