ONE (Ocean Network Express) and ClassNK have launched a comprehensive study to assess the effectiveness of roll damping tanks (RDT) in large container ships. This research, which includes the analysis of measured data on ships and numerical simulations, aims to enhance cargo safety and transportation reliability in the global supply chain.
Roll Damping Tanks and Their Application in Container Ships
Roll damping tanks are designed to reduce ship roll by controlling the movement of liquid within a tank. This type of technology has a long history in passenger ships, research vessels, and other specialized craft, but its application in container ships has increased in recent years. Reducing roll is crucial for large container ships, as excessive roll can increase the forces acting on containers and their securing systems.

Data Analysis and Collaboration Between ONE and ClassNK
Despite the increasing use of RDTs in container ships, their roll reduction performance has mainly been evaluated through model tests and numerical simulations. Verification of performance in real-world conditions based on onboard measurements is still limited. To this end, ONE is providing ClassNK with operational data collected from its fleet to evaluate this data using its extensive experience in testing, numerical simulation, and technical analysis.
Kumi Miyashita, Executive Officer of ClassNK, stated, "We are pleased to collaborate with ONE to validate the effectiveness of RDTs based on data obtained from actual ship operations. By combining real-world measured data and numerical analysis, our goal is to contribute to greater safety and efficiency in ship operations."
Masaharu Urabe, Vice President of Global Ship Operations at ONE, also said, "We are happy to work with ClassNK on this important research initiative. By combining ONE's operational data onboard and ClassNK's advanced technical analysis, our aim is to create a practical method for measuring the effectiveness of RDTs under real operational conditions. We believe that the knowledge gained from this research will enhance the safety of our ship operations and improve container loading efficiency."
As this collaboration continues, ONE and ClassNK will continue to share their operational data and technical expertise to drive innovation and contribute to a safer, more reliable, and efficient future for container transportation and the maritime industry.
