Oil Spill Response Limited (OSRL) has unveiled a new capability for deployment in shallow waters that assists in the installation of well control capsules. This system is designed to support the installation of well control capsules in complex subsea incidents.

Details of OSRL's New System

This system is a combination of the Split Lowering System (SLS), developed in collaboration with InterMoor, and a Snub Line Winch System designed by Oceaneering. These two technologies assist in the deployment of well control capsules, especially when hazardous surface conditions make vertical access to the well unsafe or impractical.

The SLS allows the well control capsule to drop from a lateral location away from hazardous surface phenomena. The Snub Line Winch System then provides the final alignment and seating of the capsule on the Blowout Preventer (BOP) or wellhead.

Deployment Capabilities and Applications

This system is designed for deployment in water depths ranging from 75 to 600 meters and can be transported via sea or air from OSRL's base in Norway. One of the key features of this system is its ability to be installed without the need to interact with the seabed, which enhances safety during operations.

Vania De Stefani, CEO of OSRL, stated: "This shallow water deployment capability represents OSRL's ongoing investment in enhancing industry preparedness for complex subsea incidents. By combining the Split Lowering System and the Snub Line Winch System, this system aids in the safe and controlled deployment of well control capsules in challenging shallow water scenarios."

OSRL showcased this new capability at SpillAsia 2026 and introduced it as part of its well control and source control preparedness suite. This initiative reflects OSRL's commitment to improving readiness and response to environmental incidents in the oil and gas industry.
