Oil India Limited (OIL) has successfully discovered natural gas in a newly discovered formation in the shallow Krishna-Godavari basin. This discovery was made in the Godavari-1 appraisal well located in the Matsiyapuri formation off the eastern coast of India. The company recorded a peak flow of 200,000 standard cubic meters per day (SCMD) in the conducted tests.
Details of the Discovery and New Capacities
Although OIL has discovered natural gas in this area, no estimate of the potential reserves obtained has been provided yet. It appears that OIL is preparing to test a new area in this basin for further drilling. This action is part of India's efforts to increase domestic oil and gas exploration, especially following the Strait of Hormuz crisis and rising energy prices.

Challenges and Future Plans
As the third-largest crude oil importer in the world, India is seeking to strengthen its energy security against disruptions in the global supply chain that can have immediate impacts on prices and energy flows. Abhijit Majumder, CFO of OIL, stated at an energy industry event in India that disruptions in the global supply chain and energy corridors could severely impact energy flows and global economies.
The Indian government has ambitious plans to increase oil exploration, especially after three consecutive years of declining domestic crude oil production. This year, the federal government launched the "National Offshore Exploration Plan," which is supported by $8.8 billion in government funding until the fiscal year 2030-31. This plan is recognized as India's most ambitious offshore exploration program in history.
