NYK (Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha) has acquired a 30% stake in the Trudvang CCS ANS project, the operator of the Trudvang CCS project in Norway, by signing a purchase and sale agreement. This project is designed for carbon storage in Norway and includes an exploration permit for CO₂ storage with the number EXL007.

Agreement Details

This transaction will be conducted through a wholly-owned subsidiary of NYK in Norway. The completion of the transfer is subject to regulatory approvals and customary closing conditions. By participating in this project, the NYK Group will be able to expand beyond maritime transport and develop capabilities in the CCS (carbon capture and storage) value chain.

Project Goals and Implications

This project is being developed under permit EXL007 on the Norwegian shelf, aiming to create a business for the transport and storage of CO₂ collected from industrial producers in Europe for injection and permanent storage in a marine geological structure. Technical and commercial studies are currently underway to commercialize this project.

One of the key factors for the success of CCS projects is the establishment of an integrated value chain that connects industrial emitters collecting CO₂ with the necessary infrastructure for transport, injection, and permanent storage of CO₂. The NYK Group will leverage expertise gained through its marine and shipping businesses, such as exploration and drilling, refining, liquefaction, and storage, to delve deeper into the transport and storage business through this project.

By participating in this project, the NYK Group aims to establish a business foundation in the CCS sector, create new value beyond traditional transport and marine business boundaries, and contribute to the realization of a decarbonized society.

On March 10, 2023, the NYK Group published its mid-term management plan titled “Sail Green, Drive Transformations 2026 – A Passion for Planetary Wellbeing.” The group is promoting growth strategies centered on sustainability based on the group's mission statement of “creating value for life” and a new corporate vision for 2030, which states: “We go beyond the scope of a comprehensive global logistics company to create the necessary values for the future by advancing our core business and growing new businesses.”
