The UK Chamber of Shipping has unveiled a fresh strategy and promotional program aimed at strengthening the competitiveness of the UK's transport industry, demonstrating the value of this industry to the country, and ensuring its continued role at the center of economic growth and resilience in the UK.
Economic Value of the Transport Industry

The new strategy, titled "Supporting UK Shipping," was launched at the Shipping UK 2026 event, which was attended by over 300 leaders from various sectors including transport, finance, defense, and government. This event took place amid increasing geopolitical uncertainties and intensified competition for attracting international investments.
Main Pillars of the Strategy
This strategy focuses on four main pillars:
- Demonstrating the Value of the Transport Industry: Increasing awareness and appreciation of the industry's contribution to job creation, trade, and economic prosperity.
- Enhancing the Competitiveness of the UK Transport Industry: Efforts to create a favorable financial, regulatory, and policy environment to support investment and growth.
- Supporting the Transition of the Transport Industry: Assisting the industry in addressing challenges related to decarbonization and technological changes.
- Strengthening Resilience and Protecting Global Trade: Enhancing the role of transport in national resilience and supporting secure and open international trade routes.
Rhett Hatcher, CEO of the UK Chamber of Shipping, stated: "The UK is a leading country in maritime transport, but future success cannot be guaranteed. The competition for attracting investment is increasing, and global trade patterns are changing."
Karrie Trauth, Chair of the UK Chamber of Shipping, also added: "The transport industry is facing profound changes. Geopolitical uncertainties and the shift to lower-emission operations necessitate the creation of a suitable policy and regulatory environment."
This strategy represents a shift towards a cohesive and campaign-based approach that brings together policy development, public affairs, communications, and member engagement around a set of shared priorities. By combining evidence-based expertise and coordinated campaigns, the Chamber will be able to more effectively influence decision-making and achieve practical outcomes for its members.
