Mentor AI, developed by Mintra, has been introduced as a finalist in the Innovation and Technology category of the Crew Connect Global Awards 2026. This technology, using supervised artificial intelligence, provides sailors with reliable practical information when needed.
Addressing Sailors' Information Needs
Mentor AI, launched in December 2025, addresses the long-standing gap between formal training and its application in real operational conditions. Sailors may need to recall critical knowledge weeks, months, or even years after completing their training. In those moments, they may rely on memory, manuals, colleagues, internet searches, or general AI tools, whose information may be difficult to verify or inconsistent with the company's approved procedures.

Unique Features of Mentor AI
Mentor AI is an AI-based operational assistant that provides sailors with immediate access to information from a library of over 400 approved maritime safety and compliance courses from Mintra. Maritime organizations can also integrate their own approved courses, procedures, and documentation, creating a controlled information source tailored to their operations.
Unlike general AI tools, Mentor AI operates in a supervised environment. The responses provided are based on approved content and are supported by dynamic references to relevant training materials and course videos, allowing users to review information and explore in greater detail.
Support for multilingualism helps crew members from different nationalities access the same approved information more cohesively. Additionally, self-assessment knowledge checks can assist sailors in identifying gaps in their understanding.
Mentor AI has transitioned from a conceptual idea to a test-ready solution for clients in about three months and is currently being tested by two maritime organizations supporting over 100 users. Initial tests indicate that sailors can find relevant guidance more quickly and make decisions with greater confidence.
Kevin Short, CEO of Mintra, stated, "Artificial intelligence has tremendous potential in the maritime industry, but in a safety-critical environment, speed of access is only valuable when people can trust the information they receive. This principle has been foundational to Mentor AI from the beginning."
Mentor AI has been developed through interdisciplinary collaboration in maritime expertise, learning design, technology, data, quality assurance, and customer implementation. This approach has enabled simultaneous content management, technical development, and testing, embedding trust and traceability from the outset of the solution.
Mentor AI does not replace structured learning, professional judgment, or experience. Rather, it supports all three, providing reliable practical knowledge when needed and helping sailors make safer and more informed decisions in safety-critical environments.
