The LNG transportation market experienced fluctuations last week but overall saw a significant improvement. This improvement was driven by rising LNG commodity prices, geopolitical uncertainties in the Middle East, and increased market activities. Market sentiment improved due to concerns about the Strait of Hormuz and low gas storage levels in Europe, although this did not fully translate into actual transportation demand as many vessels were available.
LNG Freight Rates
The assessed rates in the Baltic for LNG significantly strengthened in the first half of the week and then slightly decreased on Thursday. The BLNG1 rate (Australia-Japan route) rose from $26,800 per day at the beginning of the week to $27,200 per day by the end of the week. Additionally, BLNG2 (U.S. Gulf-Coast route) increased from $21,500 per day to a peak of $26,900 per day, before dropping to $23,900 per day at the end. Meanwhile, BLNG3 (U.S. Gulf-Japan route) saw the largest increase, rising from $40,400 per day on Monday to $53,400 per day by Friday.
Chartering Activities and LPG Market
Chartering activities were primarily focused on Australian needs and peaks in the Pacific, while export opportunities from the U.S. Gulf impacted requests related to the Atlantic basin. Additionally, signs of winter cover demand were evident, and some charterers remained competitive in securing cargo. However, reports indicated that the large number of available vessels continued to hinder rate increases.
In the LPG market, rates also increased this week due to a strong economy and a shortage of vessels. VLGC freight rates from the United States reached their highest levels, with several contracts exceeding $300 per ton HCvP, and only a few vessels remained available for immediate October needs.
On the BLPG1 route (Ras Tanura-Chiba), rates reached $242.00, and TCE earnings closed at $231,509 per day. Additionally, the BLPG2 rate (Houston-Flushing) increased by $15.50 week-on-week to $171.83, with TCE earnings rising by $20,123 to $197,444 per day. The vessel shortage and ongoing cargo demand throughout the week supported rates. Similarly, the BLPG3 rate (Houston-Chiba) increased by $32.71 to $320.71, with TCE returns rising by $23,524 to $193,696 per day. This route experienced the most significant increase due to the strong economy in the East and the limited number of vessels available for loading in October.
