Iran is facing a decrease in gas production and a severe shortage in domestic energy supply as winter approaches. The country's gross domestic product has decreased by 10.1 percent in the spring of this year compared to the same period last year, particularly evident in the oil and gas extraction sector. The added value of this sector has dropped by 26.4 percent.
Decrease in Iran's Oil and Gas Production
The International Energy Agency estimates Iran's oil production in the spring of this year at about 2.6 million barrels per day, which is more than 20 percent less than the same period last year. In the gas sector, production has been severely affected by attacks on the South Pars gas processing facilities. This field is considered the main source of gas supply for Iran, and the reduction in production due to damage to infrastructure has led to a decrease in the added value of gas distribution in the spring.

Increase in Gas Exports to Turkey
Meanwhile, Iran's gas exports to Turkey increased by 27 percent in the second quarter of the year, reaching about 30 million cubic meters per day. This increase in exports can be justified by the reduction in consumption by industries and petrochemicals and low domestic consumption during the warm summer months. However, with the onset of the cold season, it is expected that conditions will change and the gas shortage will significantly increase.
Last winter, households accounted for 49 percent of total gas consumption in Iran, and during peak consumption periods, the gas shortage could reach about 250 million cubic meters per day. This situation may pose serious challenges for the Islamic Republic in simultaneously meeting domestic needs and maintaining gas exports to Turkey and Iraq.
Overall, Iran's economic conditions require more attention due to war and damage to oil and gas infrastructure. While gas production and supply have decreased, ensuring domestic energy supply has become one of the country's main challenges. As a result, the Islamic Republic must take appropriate measures to meet domestic needs and maintain trade relations with other countries.
