The "Connecting Integrated Engineering 2026" (IEC 2026) conference was held on October 17, 2026, at the Millennium Plaza Hotel in Dubai. This event, attended by over 600 engineering professionals, senior government officials, and industry leaders from the energy, construction, and technology sectors, became one of the most significant gatherings of the year.
Examining the Challenges of the Maritime Transport Industry
Greg Stanton, honorary secretary of the UAE branch of the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology (IMarEST), was present at this conference as the main speaker. In a presentation titled "Engineering the Future of Travel," he addressed the main challenges facing the maritime transport industry. Stanton pointed out that this industry is responsible for managing over 80% of global trade while accounting for 3% of total greenhouse gas emissions.
Immediate Solutions for Carbon Reduction
Stanton, referring to stringent regulatory standards such as EEXI and CII, directed the discussion towards quick and practical solutions. He stated that while the transition of the global fleet to alternative fuels remains slow and requires an investment of over $1.5 trillion, an immediate and effective solution is reducing hydrodynamic drag. He demonstrated that maintaining a smooth hull can improve power efficiency by up to 18%, reduce speed loss, and significantly decrease fuel consumption.
At the end of his speech, Stanton said, "Ladies and gentlemen, we do not need to wait for a trillion-dollar fuel revolution to protect our planet and our profits." This speech was met with enthusiastic applause from the audience, showcasing his impactful leadership in elevating IMarEST's position regionally.
Implications and Importance of Leadership in Marine Engineering
Stanton's leadership at this conference demonstrates that marine engineers are actively providing practical and high-impact solutions that the world today needs. Given the serious challenges of climate change and global pressures to reduce carbon emissions, delivering immediate and effective methods is a fundamental priority.
