Baleària has launched its first fast and fully electric ferry with the aim of creating a sustainable and innovative maritime connection. This project, considered a strategic transformation for the company, is expected to establish a connection between the cities of Tarifa in Spain and Tangier in Morocco starting in the summer of 2027.
Details of Electric Ferry Construction
The new ferry, which has been launched during its construction phases, is the fifth vessel built by Armón for Baleària. This ferry is 87 meters long and is designed with an aluminum structure that offers a combination of lightweight, strength, and high performance. Additionally, this ferry has a battery system with an energy storage capacity of 14 megawatt-hours (MWh).
The total cost of the project to build two ferries and electrify the ports of Tarifa and Tangier is estimated to exceed 200 million euros. This project will not only help create direct employment in this industry but will also lead to the strengthening of indirect employment. It is estimated that each of these two catamarans will create over 300 direct jobs each day.
Technological Challenges and Industrial Impact
The complexity of launching this ferry increases due to technological challenges. The launch operation, which involves controlled refilling of the dry dock, is one of the main stages in the construction process. In this particular case, the distinctive feature of this project is that two catamarans are being constructed simultaneously in one dry dock.
After the first ferry is launched, the dock will be emptied again to complete the second ferry in dry conditions. The first ferry, which has now been launched, will proceed to the stages of internal outfitting and commissioning of its auxiliary systems. Sea trials will also be conducted afterward to confirm its operational reliability and safety.
Baleària's CEO, Adolfo Utor, noted that this project will accelerate the goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 and demonstrates the ability for innovation, investment, and industrial collaboration to expedite carbon reduction in maritime transport.
