The semi-annual report from Integr8 Fuels, which examines fuel quality performance from February to July 2026, reveals that global quality averages increasingly obscure significant differences between ports, supply chains, and fuel characteristics. Changes in crude oil flows, refinery schedules, and regional supply pools have contributed to the rising risks of local quality.

Local Quality Hazards

Fuel quality performance varies significantly depending on the port, grade, and supply chain, such that global averages often hide higher-risk locations and specific quality characteristics. This situation necessitates special attention to fuel quality at each port and supply chain.

Changes in Fuel Characteristics

Changes in crude oil and product supply alter the composition of local fuel pools. Characteristics such as sulfur, cold flow properties, sediments, and other attributes vary across different regions. Additionally, fuel quality exceeding specified standards can impact delivery value, indicating that compliance with specifications does not necessarily convey the full commercial impact of the fuel.

The risk of flashpoint in liquid fuels (MGO) is concentrated in specific supply chains, with significant differences between large supply hubs and smaller supply locations. Furthermore, the declaration rates for biofuel blends compared to ISO reference standards are high, but much of this risk relates to parameters that may not reflect contractual or operational risk.

Chris Turner, Technical Director of Integr8 Fuels, states: "Quality headline rates tell only part of the story. During this period, what stands out is the high concentration of underlying diversity. Risk is increasingly determined by the port, supply chain, and characteristics of the existing fuel pool, rather than the global average for a specific grade. Therefore, buyers need to look beyond specifications and headline prices to understand the value and operational implications of the fuel they are purchasing."

This report also examines loss control in bunker fuel supply and shows how differences in energy, density variations, and additional heating and transportation needs can create costs that are overlooked when assessing fuel solely based on specification constraints.

The findings emphasize the importance of using accurate and up-to-date quality data in selecting fuel supply locations and supply chains, especially where multiple supply options are available.
