Peter Sand, chief analyst at Xeneta, announced that freight rates, especially from the Far East to the shores of the United States, may peak in the first half of October. Current rate reviews show that Spot rates for shipping goods from the Far East to the West and East coasts of the United States have increased to $8,255 and $11,445 per 40-foot container (FEU), respectively, representing increases of 18.4% and 30.7% since July 1.
Short-Term Market Rate Analysis
Freight rates for containerized goods destined for Northern Europe and the Mediterranean also indicate a continuous decline since July 1. Rates on these routes have decreased to $3,945 and $4,369 per FEU, showing decreases of 29% and 38%, respectively. Peter Sand noted that a brief pause in this downward trend may be observed in early October, but overall market conditions will continue to trend downward.
New Challenges in the Shipping Market
Sand also pointed to operational challenges that have impacted the container shipping market in recent months. While these challenges alone did not have a significant impact, their accumulation has led to major changes in transportation networks. This situation has put carriers in a difficult position as they prepare for 2027 contracts. While the contract rates they are pursuing are significantly distant from the current hot Spot rates, they cannot simply ignore market conditions.
Carriers need to assess disruptive factors individually and compare them with their shipping needs. This assessment is crucial not only financially but also operationally. Xeneta provides unparalleled market insights in this regard.
