The synergy meeting for the protection and restoration of the Hawr al-Azim wetland was held this afternoon (Tuesday, October 5). In this meeting, the views and proposals of representatives from government agencies, the local community, NGOs, academics, and experts regarding the protection and restoration of this wetland and the development plan for the Sohrab oil field were discussed.
Participants and Meeting Topics
In this meeting, Nasrollah Zarei, CEO of the Oil Engineering and Development Company, and Shahram Ahmadi, Director General of Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) at the Ministry of Oil, along with a group of representatives from the local community and the network of NGOs in Khuzestan province, academics, and environmental and natural resources experts were present. These individuals emphasized the necessity of the effective involvement of the surrounding communities in the protection and restoration programs for Hawr al-Azim.

Scientific Perspectives and Local Community
Members of the NGO network in Khuzestan province and environmental and natural resources activists also presented their views on the protection of natural resources, sustainable development, and the role of NGOs in implementing programs related to the wetland. In another part of the meeting, university professors and experts in the fields of environment, natural resources, and sustainable development discussed the requirements for the protection and restoration of Hawr al-Azim.
Legal and regulatory considerations related to the protection of the wetland were also among the topics of this meeting, and the legal capacities to support the protection and restoration programs for Hawr al-Azim were examined. Representatives of the government agencies present at the meeting also shared their views, and the proposals presented for drafting a comprehensive protection and restoration program for Hawr al-Azim were summarized.
Development Plan for the Sohrab Oil Field
Subsequently, discussions were held regarding the development plan for the Sohrab oil field and the necessity of simultaneously addressing the requirements for development and the protection of the environment and the Hawr al-Azim wetland. This meeting is considered an important event for synergy between government agencies and the local community.
At the end, it was decided that a third meeting on this topic would be held with the presence of representatives from relevant agencies, the local community, NGOs, academics, and experts in Khuzestan province, and the issues raised in previous meetings would be followed up to achieve practical solutions and mutual agreements.
