Gas Infrastructure Europe (GIE) announced in its recent report that European buyers are expected to face increased competition for U.S. LNG imports this winter. This warning comes in light of new forecasts regarding winter supply, which indicate that the volume of imports must exceed last season's records to maintain sufficient gas storage.
Gas Storage Situation in Europe
According to GIE forecasts, Europe needs to maintain high storage levels to meet the increasing gas demand this cold season. Last season, Europe faced significant challenges in securing gas, bringing reserves close to dangerous levels. Given the weather conditions and high demand, this time, the volume of imports needs to increase significantly.

Competition for U.S. LNG
European buyers have turned heavily to U.S. LNG due to the need for gas to meet energy demands this winter. Meanwhile, the United States, as one of the largest LNG producers in the world, has high capacities for exports. GIE estimates that to prevent a gas crisis in Europe, imports need to increase by about 100 billion cubic meters, which would set a record in LNG import history.
Currently, gas reserves in Europe are under pressure due to declining domestic production and increasing demand. Given the rising prices and market volatility, competition for securing LNG is expected to intensify, which could have significant impacts on prices and energy security in Europe.
