Vår Energi and Equinor reported the discovery of gas and condensate at the Lacris field located in the Norwegian Sea. Initial estimates suggest that recoverable resources from this field range from 1.3 million barrels of oil equivalent (MMboe) to 5.5 million barrels of oil equivalent (MMboe).
Details of the Discovery at the Lacris Field
This discovery was made in the exploratory well 6407/5-3 S in production license 1002 located in the Gimsan basin in the Halten Terrace, approximately 170 kilometers northwest of Kristiansund. Vår Energi is the operator of this license, and Equinor is its partner. The drilling of this well was conducted by the COSL Prospector rig.
Reservoir Characteristics and Well Depth
This well discovered gas and condensate in heterogeneous reservoir rocks at a depth of 54 meters in the upper layer of the Tilje Formation, although the reservoir quality was reported as average to poor. No gas-water contact was observed in this well, and signs of hydrocarbons were identified in the underlying Tilje Formation.
While the well was targeting a sandstone reservoir in the Nise Formation, no sandstone reservoir was discovered, although high gas readings were recorded in this section. The Garn, Ile, and Tofte layers were also examined, but these sections contained water and had average to poor reservoir quality.
The well reached a vertical depth of 4,225 meters below the surface at a water depth of 218 meters. This well was not tested for formation, but data and samples were collected. Ultimately, this well will be permanently plugged and abandoned.
