The European Investment Bank (EIB) has taken action by providing a €100 million loan for the development of Klaipeda Port, Lithuania's largest port. This loan is allocated to transform Klaipeda Port into a strategic gateway for defense, energy, and trade in the Baltic region. The Klaipeda Port Authority will use this loan to update and expand infrastructure, enhancing the port's role in military mobility and increasing clean energy facilities.
Port Infrastructure Development and NATO Compliance
The location of Klaipeda Port, dating back to the 13th century, is significant for NATO operations. Part of the cruise ship terminal is being modified to comply with NATO requirements to provide better logistical support for the allied naval fleet. This dual approach strengthens military mobility while maintaining the value of infrastructure for civilian transport and the local economy. The project is expected to be completed by the end of 2027.
Project Details and Financing
The EIB loan will cover up to half of the total project cost, estimated at around €201 million, with the remainder of the financing coming from the European Union, national sources, and other entities. The project includes providing shore power for ferries, producing green hydrogen and fueling infrastructure, low-emission port vessels, upgrading docks for offshore wind energy development, dredging operations, and strengthening breakwaters.
Karl Nehammer, Vice President of the EIB, commented on the project: "There are few projects that clearly demonstrate Europe's priorities. This investment directly supports European security and cohesion missions and aligns with the green transition."
Klaipeda Port is part of the European Union's Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T). Upgrading docks and marine infrastructure will help position Klaipeda as a key logistics hub for the deployment and maintenance of offshore wind farms, supporting the green transition and energy security in Europe.
Algis Latakas, Director General of the Klaipeda Port Authority, stated: "Klaipeda Port is an important part of Lithuania's infrastructure that supports the economy, energy security, and national security of the country. The financing agreement signed today with the EIB is an important step in advancing the port's development and helps us complete key projects that will shape the future of Klaipeda Port."
