The European Commission is drafting protective measures to limit imports of Chinese hybrid cars. These measures are likely to include tariffs related to the volume of imports, whereby duties will be imposed on each imported unit above a specified volume. These actions are considered a "test" that, if successful, could be applied in other sectors facing Chinese imports.

Significant Increase in Chinese Car Imports

Chinese hybrid cars currently hold a significant share of the European hybrid car market. According to statistics, monthly imports of Chinese hybrid cars to the European Union have risen from 3,800 units in October 2024 to 50,000 units in July 2026, indicating an increase of about 13 times. In August, Chinese brands managed to capture 11.7% of total new car registrations in Europe, up from 7.1% last year.

Economic Consequences for Germany

Germany, as one of the largest car markets in Europe, is experiencing the most damage from this trend. Statistics show that registrations of Chinese cars in Germany increased by about 90% in August, with their share reaching 8%. This situation occurs while factory orders in Germany fell by 10.6% in August, marking one of the largest monthly declines recorded.

Therefore, the European Commission is seeking to adopt measures to mitigate this trend and somewhat address domestic concerns. This action seems to be part of Europe's overall strategy to strengthen domestic production and reduce reliance on foreign imports.

Given that China is currently recognized as one of the largest players in the global car market, these protective measures may be viewed as a temporary action and could take on broader dimensions in the future. In this context, analysts believe that these actions will only temporarily limit China's market share in Europe and cannot completely prevent the expansion of these brands.
