Electric vehicle sales, particularly battery electric vehicles (BEVs), have reached a new record in the European Union this year. According to the published report, from January to August 2026, sales of these vehicles increased by 45% compared to the previous year, reaching 1.64 million units. This sales increase has occurred at a time when fuel prices have reached their highest level and new, affordable models have also been introduced to the market.

Record Electric Vehicle Sales in the Second Quarter of 2026

For the first time in history, sales of battery electric vehicles have surpassed fossil fuel vehicles in a full quarter. In the second quarter of 2026, due to disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz and rising oil prices, fuel prices have also surged significantly. This situation has led to a shift in consumer purchasing patterns towards electric vehicles. The report's authors stated that currently, drivers of gasoline and diesel vehicles are facing more challenges, while electric vehicle drivers have remained unaffected by this crisis.

Factors Influencing Increased Demand for Electric Vehicles

Analyses show that the costs associated with charging home electric vehicles are on average 50% lower than fuel costs for gasoline and diesel vehicles. Meanwhile, by mid-September 2026, battery electric vehicles priced below €25,000 (equivalent to $28,000) have also become available. It is expected that by the end of 2026, around 60 new models will be introduced to the market, which is nearly four times the average of 15 new models annually from 2021 to 2025.

Official automotive industry statistics also confirm that the fuel crisis has led to major changes in buyer preferences. Sales of battery electric vehicles in Europe, including the UK, Switzerland, and Norway, increased by 52.2% in August 2026 compared to the previous year. This sales increase is due to unprecedented gasoline and diesel prices, which have pushed drivers towards electric and hybrid vehicles.

The European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA) has also stated that demand for various types of electric vehicles remains strong, thanks to market support and a wider variety of models. Given this trend, the future of electric vehicles in Europe appears very bright and growing.
