The Donald Trump administration (Donald Trump) decided to exempt new sanctions against Russia by issuing an executive order on October 16, 2023. These sanctions were designed under a law passed by former U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham (Lindsey Graham) and aimed to pressure Moscow following the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

Criticism and Reactions

This decision by Trump faced sharp criticism from Kyiv and some American lawmakers. They believe this action sends a message to Moscow that U.S. support for Ukraine has weakened. In response to the criticism, Trump wrote on the social media platform Truth Social: "I am negotiating for peace in the war between Russia and Ukraine and do not want to do anything that foolishly drives Russia away from the negotiating table."

Meanwhile, Ukraine and Russia still have significant differences in their positions in negotiations, and talks have reached a deadlock. The Kremlin has not offered any concessions and has repeatedly rejected calls for a complete ceasefire. As a result, both sides have increased their attacks, with Moscow targeting Kyiv and other major cities, as well as Ukraine's energy infrastructure.

Russian Attacks and Ukraine's Response

On October 18, Kyiv Mayor Vitaliy Klitschko (Vitaliy Klitschko) reported that at least one person had died in Russian attacks on the city, including an attack on a medical center. In response, the Ukrainian armed forces have attacked Russian purification operations to disrupt their military activities. This has angered Trump, while his Republican Party faces rising fuel prices as it tries to maintain control of both the Senate and the House of Representatives.

Trump also accused Volodymyr Zelenskyy (Volodymyr Zelenskyy), the President of Ukraine, of having no desire to end the war, stating that he "does not want to end this war and probably never did." In response to this accusation, Zelenskyy said that if U.S. support for Ukraine is cut off, Ukraine will not be able to win.

Increasing Tensions and Consequences

Tensions between Washington and Kyiv regarding Trump's approach to Russia are rising. Zelenskyy announced that he has had discussions with U.S. representatives and that the two countries are planning the next diplomatic steps. He also noted that Ukraine is ready for constructive and honest cooperation to find a real outcome.

Zelenskyy stated in a social media post: "Peace can only be achieved through strength and cooperation based on trust. We are working to make this happen and ensure that the U.S. position is strong and helps bring peace closer. Peace that everyone, except Russia, has been waiting for over the past four and a half years."
