Iran has achieved a total capacity of 17,500 billion cubic feet of gas with the discovery of the Takhteh and Pazan gas fields. This large volume of discovered gas places Iran at the top of the world in terms of gas discoveries. For a country facing energy imbalance and growing domestic demand, these discoveries are not only an exploratory achievement but also a support for the decades to come.

Features of the Takhteh Gas Field

The Takhteh gas field, located in the south of Fars province, has a capacity of about 7,500 billion cubic feet of gas in place, making it particularly significant. With a recovery factor of 72 percent, about 5,700 billion cubic feet of it is recoverable. In other words, this field has the production capacity equivalent to about 15 years of a standard phase of South Pars. The gas from this field is sweet and does not require a complex sweetening process, which reduces costs.

In addition to gas, the Takhteh field has about 27 million barrels of gas condensate, of which 20 million barrels are estimated to be recoverable. The economic value of this field is estimated to be around 45 billion dollars in total.

Technical Complexity and Iranian Nature of Discoveries

The Takhteh field is recognized as one of the most complex exploratory structures in the past two decades. The structure of this field, with a length of 50 kilometers and a width of 4 kilometers, required exploratory drilling to a depth of 5 kilometers. The discovery of this field was carried out relying on domestic capabilities, indicating the scientific and engineering maturity in the field of oil and gas exploration in the country.

The discovery of the Pazan gas field has also contributed to this trend, adding approximately 10 trillion cubic feet to Iran's gas reserves. However, the process of developing and producing from these fields requires investment and time, and the discovery should not be equated with production.

Ultimately, these discoveries should be considered as part of long-term solutions to address gas imbalance. Increasing exploratory activities and developing the necessary infrastructure can help convert these reserves into actual production capacities and ensure the country's energy security.
