An industrial coalition has officially been launched to develop a green transport corridor between VO Chidambaranar (VOC) Port in India and Europe. This corridor will focus on the use of green methanol and green ammonia as marine fuels.

Signing of the Cooperation Agreement

Indian and European officials signed a letter of intent to officially launch this coalition. This initiative was announced by the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways of India. The coalition will include officials from VO Chidambaranar Port and aims to explore the potential use of green ammonia and green methanol as bunker fuels along the corridor.

Assessment of Needs and Infrastructure

This coalition will assess the availability of fuels, potential demand from ships, and infrastructure needs for bunkering and storage. Additionally, identifying suitable ports in Europe for this corridor will be on the agenda. This project will be based on a feasibility study that will commence in 2025.

The Indian government has not yet announced a specific timeline for the development of this green transport corridor between India and Europe. The recent agreement follows previous efforts to establish green transport links between India and Europe. In April 2025, the Indian government and the Port of Rotterdam announced plans to explore a green transport corridor between the two countries.

Feasibility Workshops and International Collaborations

Indian and Danish officials also participated in a feasibility workshop held in May 2026 by the Maersk Carbon Neutral Shipping Center. This workshop examined the availability of alternative fuels, port readiness, and the availability of ships on routes between the two countries.

The development of this green transport corridor will not only help reduce carbon emissions but could also strengthen trade and economic relations between India and Europe. Given the increasing importance of green fuels and sustainability in the transport industry, this project could play a vital role in the future of this sector.
