The decline of rare earth element (REE) stocks occurs while the prices of these raw materials have increased by an average of 23%. This clearly indicates instability and misalignment in the rare earth market, raising questions about the reasons behind this decline.

Reasons for the Decline of Rare Earth Stocks

Analysts, including the critical minerals team at Canaccord led by Greg Stanton, have examined this issue. They believe that the poor performance of stocks is due to global macroeconomic factors as well as market instability. Despite rising prices, the stocks of rare earth developers have declined by an average of 17%, and producers have seen a 28% drop.

Price and Market Developments

The price of NdPr (Neodymium and Praseodymium) outside of China has increased by 23% this year, reaching $110 per kilogram. Meanwhile, the stocks of companies like Lynas and MP Materials have significantly declined. This market contradiction is also due to recent developments in U.S. government policies and price floor regulations on rare earth elements, which have helped normalize prices.

Other factors such as supply shortages in the West and structural changes in the market also contribute to this instability. For example, the price of Yttrium in China averages $9 per kilogram, while its price in Western markets has reached $1,150 per kilogram, showing a 179-fold difference.

Future Outlook

According to Canaccord's forecasts, prices may experience significant changes in the future. For instance, it is predicted that the price of Yttrium in Western markets may drop to $100 per kilogram by 2030. Meanwhile, global demand for rare earth elements continues to rise due to their use in advanced technologies and defense systems.

Ultimately, this instability and decline in stocks indicate the significant challenges facing the rare earth market, which requires closer monitoring and analysis. It seems that the market needs to move towards stability and alignment with real prices to achieve sustainable growth and development.
