ConocoPhillips and Venture Global have signed a 20-year contract under which ConocoPhillips will supply one million tons of liquefied natural gas (LNG) starting in 2030. This agreement is part of the overall trend in the energy industry to increase the share of LNG following the QatarEnergy emergency situation. Despite geopolitical crises and their impact on prices, the demand outlook for LNG remains promising.
Contract Details
Venture Global's CEO, Mike Sabel, expressed his happiness about this collaboration, stating: "Venture Global is proud to welcome ConocoPhillips, one of the leading companies in the global energy industry, as a long-term partner. This agreement represents the market's ongoing trust in our ability to deliver American LNG at low cost, quickly, and at scale." This contract is being made at a time when Venture Global is facing challenges from several major oil companies.
Challenges for Venture Global
In 2023, major oil companies such as Shell, BP, and Repsol accused Venture Global of violating long-term supply contracts. The company was accused of seeking quick profits by selling LNG shipments in higher-priced markets. This situation arose due to the use of a legal loophole to extend the deadline for the Calcasieu Pass export project launch.
In August, Shell lost arbitration against Venture Global, and the court ruled that this American company had not violated its contractual obligations to long-term customers. However, two months later, the court ruled in favor of BP. Meanwhile, Venture Global is increasing its production capacity at two facilities, both of which are currently operational and also constructing new facilities.
Currently, Venture Global has an annual capacity of 100 million tons of LNG, which includes operational and under-construction capacities. The company is considered one of the largest LNG traders globally.
