The BIMCO Ship Management Advisory Panel, in a meeting held on September 25, 2026, emphasized the need to attract more women as seafarers. Considering that women make up only 1.2 percent of seafarers, the maritime industry has a vast opportunity to expand its workforce.
Examining the Challenges of the Maritime Workforce
This panel examined the recruitment of women seafarers alongside other challenges facing the workforce. One important issue was ensuring fair treatment of crew members who face problems such as legal penalties or abandonment at sea. Fleet management presented reasons for encouraging women to pursue maritime careers, and panel members also emphasized efforts to create a diverse maritime workforce.
BIMCO's Actions to Support Seafarers
BIMCO also referred to its ongoing work in criminalization and fair treatment of seafarers, which is part of the organization's broader policies to support the sustainability of the maritime workforce. The organization continuously seeks to improve the conditions for seafarers and raise awareness in the industry and regulatory bodies. The "Deserving Seafarers in Fair Seas" campaign highlights the challenges faced by seafarers and the need for more support.
The BIMCO Ship Management Advisory Panel is set to meet again in early 2027 to continue discussing these topics and explore new solutions for attracting and retaining seafarers.
