VO Chidambaranar Port (VOC), located on the southeastern coast of India, has recently conducted drills and simulations to prepare for the pilot implementation of methanol bunkering at this port. This port is part of the international shipping route from East to West and holds the most strategic position in the region.
Conducting Methanol Bunkering Training Session
The port management held a methanol bunkering training session for staff from the traffic, marine, mechanical, and fire safety departments. Representatives from the project contractor, SOPAN, were also present at this session. The session included a live demonstration and practical simulations at the designated site for bunkering, focusing on safety in methanol transport and preparation for future operations.
Details and Future Implications of Methanol Bunkering
Despite holding these drills, port officials have not yet announced the exact date for the pilot implementation of methanol bunkering, nor have they provided information on how fuel will be supplied to ships. Earlier this year, another port in India hosted the first methanol bunkering test from shore to ship. In this test, a vessel belonging to Stolt Tankers received an unspecified amount of gray methanol at Kandla Port.
Additionally, the management of VO Chidambaranar Port has approved a methanol bunkering guideline and standard operating procedures to support bunkering operations. These actions demonstrate India's serious commitment to developing the use of clean fuels and reducing the environmental impacts of fossil fuels.
