The Baltic Dry Index, which tracks the shipping rates of vessels carrying dry bulk goods, fell by 1.2% to 2660 points on Friday. This decline marked the end of its four-day uptrend and indicates fluctuations in the dry bulk shipping market.
Decline in Panamax and Capesize Indices
Among various indices, the Panamax Index, which typically carries between 60,000 to 70,000 tons of coal or grains, decreased by about 2% to 2109 points, reaching its lowest level since August 24. This decline indicates that demand for this type of shipping has currently decreased, consequently affecting rates.
Additionally, the Capesize Index, which usually carries 150,000-ton shipments such as iron ore and coal, also fell by 1.5% to 3791 points. This index also ended its four-day uptrend, reflecting the challenges present in the maritime shipping market.
Changes in the Supramax Index
Among smaller vessels, the Supramax Index decreased by 0.2% to 1887 points. These changes in the market indicate that the maritime shipping sector is currently under more pressure, and price fluctuations could impact the entire industry.
However, over the past week, the benchmark Baltic Dry Index has generally increased by about 5.9%, marking its second consecutive weekly increase. This rise is primarily due to higher demand in the larger segments of the market. This situation could indicate significant changes in supply and demand patterns that require closer examination.
