Asia has currently gained an advantage in the liquefied natural gas (LNG) market over Europe, as mild weather forecasts in Europe and a warmer outlook for North Asia have limited heating demand at the start of the season. This situation has allowed Asian buyers to outpace European buyers in the competition for flexible LNG cargoes from the United States.
Analysis of LNG Demand Situation
It is expected that temperatures in Europe will generally remain mild in the coming weeks, which has significantly impacted gas demand for heating. For example, Northern European countries are facing reduced heating demand compared to previous years. Meanwhile, in North Asia, particularly in countries like Japan and South Korea, demand for liquefied natural gas is increasing due to the need for energy supply for industry and heating.

Competition Between Asian and European Buyers
As Asia is recognized as a major market for liquefied natural gas, buyers in this region are seeking to secure U.S. LNG cargoes. Currently, LNG prices in Asia are higher than in Europe, indicating a strong willingness among Asian buyers to meet their energy needs. Meanwhile, LNG prices in Europe have come under pressure and have reached their lowest levels.
For example, last week, the price of liquefied natural gas in Asia reached $11 per million BTU, while in Europe this price dropped to around $8. This price difference allows Asian buyers to purchase more cargoes from the United States, thereby impacting the market.
In this situation, major liquefied natural gas companies in Asia are looking to secure new contracts and procure more cargoes. Meanwhile, European companies are facing challenges in securing energy, which could affect their energy production and consumption plans.
