Argentina is planning to sue Britain over the oil drilling project off the coast of the Falkland Islands. This action comes at the direction of Javier Milei, the President of Argentina, and international legal actions will commence if the project is not halted.

Details of Argentina's Complaint

Javier Milei announced in a social media post: "I have instructed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and legal teams to initiate international arbitration against Britain for the illegal plundering of our resources through the Sea Lion project in the northern Malvinas basin." Milei also emphasized that if Britain does not stop the oil project within the next two weeks, Argentina will approach the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea.

The Sea Lion Project and Its Implications

The Sea Lion project, managed by Navitas Petroleum Development and Production Ltd and its British partner, Rockhopper Exploration, has recently made a final investment decision. This means that all necessary permits and financing for the full implementation of the project have been secured. Oil production from this field is expected to commence in March 2028 and continue for over 30 years. The project is expected to create new jobs in the Falkland Islands and the British supply chain.

Navitas and Rockhopper, rejecting the warnings from the President of Argentina, have stated that they have obtained valid drilling permits in the region from the British government. Relations between Argentina and Britain have always been strained and tense due to Argentina's claim of ownership over the Falkland Islands, known in Britain as the Falkland Islands. A brief war between the two countries occurred in 1982 over these islands, which Argentina calls Malvinas, but tensions have never fully subsided.

Recently, at the United Nations General Assembly, Milei criticized the organization, describing it as a "useless" entity that serves "arrogant parasites." These remarks reflect the escalation of tensions between Argentina and Britain over the issue of the Falkland Islands and could have significant implications for the international relations of both countries.
