API (American Petroleum Institute) has released version 17 of Standard 5B, introducing new requirements for the production, measurement, and inspection of oil and gas pipe connections. This standard includes connections for casing pipes, tubulars, and line pipes, aiming to enhance measurement accuracy and repeatability using modern technologies such as optical and laser technologies.

Goals of the 5B Standard Update

The API 5B standard sets dimensional requirements and acceptance criteria for connections used in oil country tubular goods (OCTG). Maintaining the integrity of connections is crucial to ensure their reliable performance under the loads and working conditions present in wells and piping systems. Achal Lidar, Senior Vice President of API Global Industrial Services, stated, "Reliable pipe connections depend on accuracy at the point of production and trust in how they are measured."

Changes in Dimensions and Inspection Requirements

According to this updated standard, traditional mechanical measurement will remain the primary method for accepting or rejecting connections, especially when results obtained using alternative measurement technologies are under discussion. This update also revises dimensions and tolerances for measuring the thickness of Buttress teeth and their adjustment standards, providing new guidance for determining the ovality of connections and related spacing requirements.

API has also updated old quality requirements and regulations regarding the measurement of pipe rings and plugs to align Standard 5B with other current API standards for OCTG. The updated images include three-dimensional representations of measurement tools and connection features.

The API 5B standard has been published since 1939, allowing manufacturers, inspectors, and buyers to have common requirements for verifying the dimensions of connections and acceptance criteria. This standard is now the primary API standard for activities related to casing pipes, tubulars, and line pipes, with over 550 API Monogram licenses issued.

API has also released the sixth edition of Operational Guideline 5B1 concurrently with this updated standard. Guideline 5B1 provides technical guidance and inspection practices to support the application of the requirements of Standard 5B.
