The unveiling ceremony and presentation of the strategic document for digital transformation of Abadan Oil Refinery aimed at smartening processes, developing artificial intelligence applications, and enhancing data-driven decision-making was held on November 24, 2024.
Emphasis on the Necessity of Digital Transformation
At the ceremony, Jamshid Khalifeh, the Industrial Operations Manager of Abadan Oil Refinery, highlighted the importance of digital transformation in the refining industry, stating that the use of modern technologies and artificial intelligence tools has become a strategic necessity for companies. He added: "Our goal is to lead in the digital age and transform into a safe, sustainable, agile, and data-driven refinery."
Formation of Artificial Intelligence Steering Committee
Khalifeh also noted that as of November 24, 2024, an Artificial Intelligence Steering Committee has been established by the CEO's directive. This committee consists of heads of the Operations Management, Planning, Commerce, HSED, Research and Technology, Human Resources, and Finance departments. The goal of this committee is to plan coherently for utilizing the capacities of artificial intelligence and digital transformation at the Abadan refinery.
He continued: "Abadan Oil Refinery will begin the project to develop the digital transformation roadmap in June 2025, and this project will be executed in three phases over nine months. The final report of this project has also been received."
Technical Aspects of the Digital Transformation Roadmap
Saeed Shakouri, Head of the Digital Transformation Center at the Oil Industry Research Institute, elaborated on the technical aspects of the document and the digital transformation roadmap at the ceremony. He stated: "The current status of the Abadan refinery was examined, and areas ripe for transformation were identified. The necessary projects for moving towards a smart refinery were defined and categorized based on short-term, medium-term, and long-term priorities."
Shakouri added: "The developed roadmap includes axes such as digital leadership, smart operations, and infrastructure development, and with the formation of the steering committee and specialized working groups, the necessary groundwork for pursuing digital transformation programs and developing artificial intelligence applications has been established."
