The 4.6% decrease in the Baltic Dry Index (Baltic Dry Index) to 3268 points indicates new challenges in the maritime transport market for dry goods. This decline marks the second consecutive day of decrease for this index and has reached its lowest level since the beginning of September 2026.
Impact of Global Prices on Indices
The Capesize index, which typically carries 150,000-tonne loads including iron ore and coal, has decreased by 7.5% to 5351 points. This decline is likely due to lower iron ore prices resulting from abundant global supply. Iron ore prices in global markets have faced a decline due to increased production and inventory levels.
Status of Other Indices
Meanwhile, the Panamax index, which typically carries 60,000 to 70,000-tonne loads of coal or grains, also saw a 0.2% decrease, reaching 2402 points. This decline is partly due to the decrease in wheat prices observed in international markets. On the other hand, the Supramax index increased by 0.2% to 1790 points, indicating a rise in demand for this category of vessels.
Overall, the current state of the maritime transport market for dry goods is influenced by factors such as global prices and fluctuating supply and demand. It seems that these fluctuations will continue, particularly creating financial and operational challenges for shipowners and transport companies.
