Volodymyr Zelensky, the President of Ukraine, threatened to increase attacks on Russian oil refineries in an interview with Reuters. He emphasized that Kyiv would not target civilian objectives in its attacks on Russia, but in response to Russian airstrikes, it would focus on the energy sector of the country as its main target.

Intensification of Attacks on Refineries

Zelensky stated: "We must respond to their attacks on our energy sector by any means we can; we must respond to their energy sector. First and foremost, we will target oil refineries, as they are a source of funding for advancing this war."

These remarks came in the wake of a change in Russian policy to increase attacks on civilian targets and infrastructure in Ukraine ahead of the winter season. Zelensky also claimed that Ukrainian intelligence services had obtained documents indicating Russian President Vladimir Putin's decision to intensify attacks on these targets.

Developments in the Donbas Region

Zelensky referred to the successes of Ukrainian forces in a counter-operation codenamed "Vivaldi" and announced that these forces had regained control over approximately 140 square kilometers of the Donbas region in eastern Ukraine. This area is under pressure from Russian control and is a key point for any peace agreement.

In this context, Donbas holds significant strategic importance as a center for oil and gas production and extraction in Ukraine. Any change in the status of this region could have substantial impacts on the balance of power in the ongoing war.

Additionally, Zelensky mentioned criticisms from former U.S. President Trump, who had urged Ukraine to refrain from attacking Russian oil facilities. Trump warned that such actions could lead to an increase in global diesel prices.

Ongoing Attacks on Ukrainian Infrastructure

The capital of Ukraine, Kyiv, has recently been subjected to a series of drone and missile attacks. These attacks have targeted energy facilities, communications, and road and rail infrastructure. Notably, Russia has targeted the bridge over the Dnipro River for the first time, which connects the east and west of Kyiv.

Zelensky, referring to these developments, emphasized the need to secure key infrastructure and maintain the country's military capabilities, calling for more international support to counter Russian threats.
