XRG, a company affiliated with Abu Dhabi, is exploring the purchase of a stake in the Canadian LNG project, which is led by Shell Plc. This state-owned group aims to become a major global natural gas supplier.

XRG's Negotiations with Canadian LNG Partners

XRG has initiated discussions with current investors in the Canadian LNG project, including PetroChina Co., to acquire part of their stake. However, the likelihood of reaching a final agreement remains uncertain, and representatives from XRG, Canadian LNG, and Shell have declined to comment on the matter.

Capacity and Importance of the Canadian LNG Project

The Canadian LNG project is set to commence production in 2025 from facilities located in Kitimat, western Canada. Established with an investment of approximately CAD 40 billion (USD 28.5 billion), this project has an annual capacity of 14 million tons and is considered one of the largest active facilities in North America. The products from this project are primarily exported to South Korea, Japan, and China.

Partners in this project are considering a multi-billion dollar plan to double production capacity, with a decision expected by the end of this year. Some project partners are contemplating reducing their stakes, and PetroChina, China's largest oil and gas producer, is evaluating interest in selling 15% of its stake to finance the second phase of the facilities using the proceeds from the sale.

The Canadian LNG project is seen as a crucial option for major LNG importers in Asia following disruptions caused by conflicts in the Middle East, particularly in Qatar, which supplied nearly one-fifth of the global market. This war has also heightened the necessity for expanding the project, as disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz could delay Qatar's projects and tighten market supply for years.

XRG is also acquiring assets worldwide and seeking more opportunities in oil, gas, and LNG production in Canada. The company was introduced in 2024 as the international investment arm of the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) and currently holds a stake in the Rio Grande LNG project in Texas and has invested in gas projects in Argentina, Mozambique, and Central Asia.
