World Maritime Day will be held on September 24, 2026, to raise awareness about the challenges of maritime navigation and the importance of implementing international regulations. This event takes place amid geopolitical tensions and conflicts that have direct impacts on maritime transport.
Challenges and Negative Impacts
Commercial vessels have been attacked in several critical areas, from the Strait of Hormuz to the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov, resulting in the deaths of dozens of innocent seafarers and disruptions to global trade and vital supply chains. In this regard, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) emphasizes the necessity of adhering to and enforcing international legal frameworks that maintain the security and efficiency of maritime transport.

Message from the Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organization
Arsenio Dominguez, Secretary-General of the IMO, stated in his official message for this day: "The theme of this year's World Maritime Day is 'From Policy to Action: Strengthening Maritime Excellence' and refers to realities that show how regulations can make maritime transport safer, more resilient, and cleaner, provided they are implemented globally." He added: "Implementation must make a difference, especially for those who work at sea. Seafarers are always a priority."
The theme for World Maritime Day in 2026 and 2027 gives member countries and partners of this organization the opportunity to translate global policy decisions into practical outcomes. This includes translating IMO regulations into national laws, strengthening enforcement, and enhancing training.
Bridging Implementation Gaps
One of the main focuses of the IMO's activities is to assist member countries in effectively implementing IMO regulations. This year, the organization has completed the first audit cycle under the IMO Member State Audit Scheme (IMSAS). Since the mandatory implementation of this scheme in 2026, 168 member countries (equivalent to 94% of the organization’s members) have been audited for their compliance with key IMO regulations.
Findings indicate that many countries still face challenges in translating IMO regulations into national laws, and a lack of technical expertise and infrastructure, along with weak oversight of vessels, are key challenges. Based on this information, the IMO seeks to provide technical assistance in areas where it is most needed, especially in low-income countries and developing island nations.
Technical Cooperation and Capacity Building
Effective implementation and technical cooperation ultimately depend on capacity at national and local levels. The IMO supports member countries through supportive and educational programs. The theme of World Maritime Day emphasizes practical implementation in key areas of the organization's work and invites everyone to demonstrate how maritime policy is being put into action by sharing photos or stories on social media.
