U.S. President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Monday deferring the federal tax on colored diesel until the end of the year. This action allows American drivers greater access to colored diesel, which has a lower tax, thereby reducing their fuel costs.
Details of the Federal Diesel Tax
According to published information, the federal tax on diesel is equivalent to $0.244 per gallon, which averages about $60 for a 250-gallon fill-up. However, if states coordinate with this federal action, savings could exceed $100 for each fill-up. This issue is particularly significant for Americans involved in freight transportation and food production.

Impact on Diesel Prices and the Market
Diesel prices rose above $6 per gallon last month, and according to data published on October 5, this price has reached $6.3207 per gallon. This comes as diesel prices hit their highest point of $6.53 per gallon in late September. Given the fuel supply issues arising from refinery disruptions in the Middle East and damage to Russian refineries due to Ukrainian drone attacks, this price increase has become a significant economic issue.
The Trump administration believes this executive order can help reduce the costs of goods, including food. The President stated at a rally in Nebraska that this measure allows anyone to purchase tax-free colored diesel for any reason. Colored diesel is specifically used in agricultural and construction industries and is distinguished from regular diesel by its red color.
Analysts have questioned some of the impacts of this measure, believing that the tax exemption may not significantly affect prices. As diesel prices continue to rise, this action may only serve as a temporary solution to alleviate financial pressure on drivers.
