The federal government of Pakistan has increased the prices of gasoline and high-speed diesel for October 9, 2023, by 2.31 rupees and 78 paisas per liter, respectively. As a result, the price of gasoline per liter has reached 398.96 rupees, and the price of high-speed diesel has reached 395.72 rupees.

Details of the Price Increase

This price change was implemented one day after the government increased the price of gasoline by 1.82 rupees per liter and reduced the price of high-speed diesel by 91 paisas on October 8. According to the government, this decision aligns with a new pricing mechanism that is reviewed and announced daily instead of weekly.

These price changes come amid renewed tensions between the United States and Iran. These tensions have significantly impacted global oil markets and Pakistan's fuel supply.

Government Support Plan for Consumers

The Prime Minister of Pakistan, Shahbaz Sharif, announced a special support plan on September 13, 2023, to alleviate the pressure of rising fuel prices on low-income consumers. This plan includes a discount of 100 rupees per liter of gasoline for motorcycles, three-wheeled rickshaws, and vehicles with an engine capacity of up to 800 cc.

According to estimates, about 11.8 million people will benefit from this support. Nearly 10 million motorcyclists and 800,000 rickshaw drivers can receive discounts for up to 20 liters of fuel per month. Additionally, one million vehicle owners with an engine capacity of up to 800 cc will be eligible for discounts on 30 liters of fuel per month.

Austerity Measures and Energy Consumption

Following the increase in fuel prices, the government of Pakistan implemented austerity measures and energy-saving initiatives on September 17, 2023. These measures include limiting business operating hours and holding public events. According to the issued directive, stores and shopping centers must close by 9 PM every day of the week.

These measures clearly reflect the government's efforts to control consumption and optimize energy resource management in a complex economic situation. Furthermore, given the geopolitical developments and fluctuations in the global oil market, price increases can quickly impact domestic costs.

Recently, oil prices in global markets have also experienced significant fluctuations. Given Pakistan's dependence on oil imports, any increase in global prices can rapidly affect domestic prices.
