SpaceX Starship reached orbit on Monday and deployed 26 Starlink V3 satellites during its fourteenth test flight. This flight took place after one of the six upper stage engines experienced a failure about two and a half minutes after launch.

Details of the Starship Flight

The Super Heavy rocket ignited all 33 of its engines at 7:48 AM Central Time from SpaceX's facilities at Starbase near Brownsville, Texas, and the 40-story tall vehicle flew over the Gulf of Mexico. After separation, Starship continued on its own toward orbit.

SpaceX's live broadcast initially announced that the mission could not reach orbit, but after 22 minutes of flight, company spokesperson Dan Huot revised this assessment after engineers confirmed that Starship could perform the necessary burn to reach orbital speed of about 17,500 miles per hour.

Future Plans for SpaceX

Since Elon Musk targeted this success in 2022, Starship had ended all 13 previous flights in 2023 below orbit. The development program for this project has cost over $15 billion so far. Instead of its usual landing on the tower, the Super Heavy rocket performed a simulated water landing in the Gulf of Mexico as a test.

Starship is also set to perform six orbits over 10 hours and ultimately land in the Pacific Ocean near Chile. This flight carries three Starlink satellites equipped with cameras designed to capture how the thermal shield performs during re-entry into the atmosphere.

Elon Musk stated this month that gas turbines will be completed by 2030, and SpaceX is building a factory in Bastrop, Texas, to produce turbine blades on-site. This move could reduce delivery times by up to 18 months. Additionally, the $100 billion development plan for Starbase in Louisiana, which is set to add dozens of launch pads by 2029, increases the demand for energy.

Starship is also NASA's planned human landing system for Artemis III, which is expected to connect in a test with the Orion crew capsule late next year, before the mission.
