The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA), CMA CGM Group, and Singapore LNG (SLNG) signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to explore the supply and use of bio-liquid methane as marine fuel in Singapore. The MOU was signed by Ang Wei Kiong, CEO of MPA, Bou Wagner, CEO of CMA CGM Group in the Asia-Pacific region, and Leong Wei Hong, CEO of SLNG.

Collaboration in Infrastructure Development

This collaboration combines MPA's regulatory and industrial development experience, CMA CGM's transportation and logistics expertise, and SLNG's infrastructural and technical capabilities. The parties will exchange knowledge and best industrial practices to support the development of supply routes for bio-liquid methane in Singapore, including certification, supply, and its use as marine fuel.

Review of Existing Gas Infrastructure

This collaboration will examine how existing gas infrastructure can support the supply of bio-liquid methane for marine use and how its sustainability features and greenhouse gas emission reductions can be appropriately considered, especially when blended with natural gas in shared infrastructure. Additionally, the parties will conduct tests and pilots to validate these approaches under real operational conditions.

Comments from the CEOs

Ang Wei Kiong, CEO of MPA, stated: “Liquefied natural gas is a recognized marine fuel in Singapore, and we are now looking at how low-emission types can be developed based on existing infrastructure and capabilities. This collaboration will help us explore how we can support the supply and use of bio-liquid methane as a low-emission marine fuel.”

Bou Wagner, CEO of CMA CGM in Asia-Pacific, also said: “Reducing carbon in the shipping industry requires collective action across the entire maritime ecosystem. Developing supply solutions for bio-liquid methane for transportation is a key factor in reducing carbon in this sector.”

Leong Wei Hong, CEO of SLNG, emphasized: “Bio-methane is an important pathway to support marine carbon reduction and Singapore's broader energy transition efforts. We are pleased to collaborate with MPA and CMA CGM to strengthen confidence in the maritime industry regarding bio-liquid methane.”
