By increasing its crude oil exports to 4.45 million barrels per day in August 2023, Saudi Arabia achieved the highest export level since March 2023. This increase occurred while the country's oil production decreased to 6.24 million barrels per day, reaching its lowest level.
Production Reduction and Refining Capacity
As the world's largest oil exporter, Saudi Arabia produced 6.24 million barrels per day in August 2023, which is 1.895 million barrels per day less than the production level in July, which was 8.135 million barrels. This production decrease aligns with OPEC policies and global agreements to control oil supply.
Meanwhile, the refining capacity of crude oil in Saudi Arabia also decreased by 181,000 barrels per day to 2.297 million barrels per day, down from 2.478 million barrels per day in July. Additionally, the direct burning of crude oil increased to 604,097 barrels per day this month, indicating a rise in demand for fossil fuels in the country.
Disruptions in Oil Transportation
Oil transportation from the Middle East has been significantly affected by disruptions caused by the war between the United States and Israel with Iran. Following the onset of these conflicts, Iran has blocked oil exports through the Strait of Hormuz. This issue has led to serious fluctuations in the global oil market, and Saudi Arabia, as a key player in this field, is facing new challenges.
Overall, the increase in Saudi Arabia's oil exports while production has reached its lowest level reflects the country's efforts to maintain its share in the global oil market. Given these developments, it is expected that Saudi Arabia will seek to adopt new measures to manage resources and optimize its production.
