Positive displacement measurement equipment is considered to be precise and critical components of measurement systems in the oil and gas industry, and their performance directly affects the accuracy of measurements, volume calculations, and the process of delivery and transfer of gas condensates.
The Necessity of Refurbishing Equipment at the South Pars Gas Condensate Terminal
After more than two decades of continuous use of the measurement unit at the South Pars gas condensate terminal, several blades of the 16-inch meters in this unit required refurbishment or replacement due to wear and damage from prolonged operation. Given the importance of this equipment in the measurement process and the constraints created in sourcing specialized parts from foreign manufacturers, the mechanical repair experts at the South Pars gas condensate terminal, in collaboration with the procurement and goods management, prioritized the internal refurbishment of existing parts as an alternative to foreign procurement.
Project Details and Economic Achievements
According to the planned schedule, 13 damaged blades of the 16-inch meters were refurbished and coated using the knowledge and experience of specialists from the Iranian Oil Terminals Company and the technical capacity of a domestic knowledge-based company. This operation was completed after going through technical stages, conducting necessary controls, and confirming operational capability, and the refurbished parts returned to the operational cycle.
One of the most significant economic achievements of this project is the one million euro savings resulting from replacing internal refurbishment with foreign procurement of parts. The implementation of this plan not only reduced currency costs but also contributed to extending the operational lifespan of existing equipment, preventing the exit of recoverable parts from the operational cycle, and reducing dependence on foreign suppliers.
The refurbishment of these parts also exemplifies the utilization of the capacity of knowledge-based companies and the transfer of technical knowledge and experience among oil industry specialists and the domestic technology sector; an approach that can also be applied in the repair and refurbishment of other specialized and capital-intensive equipment in the oil industry.
This initiative is a step towards developing domestic repair and refurbishment capabilities, increasing the resilience of measurement equipment, and reducing dependence on foreign resources at the country's oil terminals.
