Petrobras has announced its second oil discovery in the deepwater exploratory well Morpho (1-BRSA-1405-APS) located in the Foz do Amazonas basin off the coast of Brazil. This new discovery was made in block FZA-M-59 at a water depth of approximately 2,886 meters.
Details of the new discovery
After the initial oil discovery in this well in August 2026, Petrobras continued drilling to assess deeper exploratory targets. This new discovery has been identified through well electrical logs, rock evidence, and fluid samples collected during drilling operations. Petrobras has stated that this new discovery provides further information about the oil systems and resource potential of the Foz do Amazonas basin, which is recognized as an emerging exploratory frontier off northern Brazil.
Laboratory tests and future plans
Laboratory analyses on the discovered samples are still ongoing. Petrobras has also announced that testing of previously discovered samples in August confirmed that the oil quality is good. The company plans to complete drilling operations and continue evaluating the identified formations. However, Petrobras has not provided any estimates of the available resources or its commercial development plans.
This new discovery supports Petrobras's broader exploratory strategy, which includes assessing new marine frontiers to identify resources for future production.
