OPEC held its eighth energy dialogue meeting with China in Beijing and its seventh energy dialogue meeting with India in New Delhi, emphasizing the importance of cooperation and dialogue with the world's largest oil consumers. The main focus of these discussions was oil market stability, energy security, and the necessity of timely investment in the oil industry.
OPEC's Role in Energy Market Governance
China highlighted OPEC's role in the global energy governance system during this meeting and stressed the need to deepen cooperation with producers. India also deemed continuous dialogue between producers and consumers essential for ensuring reliable supply and creating a stable and predictable market.

Over 100 executives from oil and gas companies have provided higher price forecasts for oil in the third quarter of the year in Federal Reserve surveys. OPEC also emphasized the increasing importance of China and India in global oil demand growth.
Changes in Global Oil Demand
According to statistical reports from the Energy Institute for 2025, the United States will be the world's largest oil consumer with a daily consumption of 19.404 million barrels. China ranks second with 17.360 million barrels per day, accounting for 16.8 percent of global consumption. India, with 5.642 million barrels per day, is the third-largest oil consumer.
Global oil consumption has also reached 103.039 million barrels per day, reflecting a 1.3 percent increase from the previous year. The average annual growth rate of oil consumption in China and India is estimated to be about 3.9 percent and 3 percent, respectively.
These meetings highlight the importance of demand and investment in the oil market. The structure of global demand is changing, and demand growth in Asia, particularly in China and India, is on the rise. At the same time, OPEC recognizes that oil consumption growth in China may decline due to the increase in electric vehicles. However, India is expected to be one of the most significant growth points for oil demand in the future according to OPEC.
Implications of the Meetings for OPEC and the Oil Market
The significance of these two meetings can be summarized in three key points: strengthening the ties between large producers and consumers, emphasizing investment, and shifting the center of gravity of demand to Asia. Instead of solely focusing on supply management, OPEC is establishing long-term dialogue channels with the largest demand centers.
In OPEC's scenario, India is expected to add about 8.2 million barrels per day to its oil demand by 2050, while this increase in China is estimated to be less than 2 million barrels. These developments are geopolitically significant for OPEC, as stable relationships with major Asian consumers can reduce uncertainty about the future oil market.
Overall, OPEC is strengthening a multilateral framework for managing uncertainties in the oil market. This framework includes discussions on investment, energy security, and the long-term demand outlook, which are important for both producers and consumers.
