The oil giants including BP, Chevron, ExxonMobil, Shell, and TotalEnergies achieved a profit of $53 billion in the third quarter of this year, while this figure was $48 billion in the second quarter. This profit increase is due to unprecedented refining margins and a reduction in debt to $150 billion from $200 billion in the first quarter.

Growth of Refining Margins

The refining margin during this period reached a record of $0.40 per liter. This is while the similar figure in the second quarter was $0.31 and in the same period last year was $0.16. ExxonMobil, with a refining capacity of 636 million liters per day, will benefit the most from this situation.

Despite profitability, major oil companies have focused more on reducing their debt rather than new investments since the onset of the Iran war in February. This approach seems logical, as energy market tensions have intensified with each new piece of news.

Future Challenges for the Oil Industry

The war in the Middle East has turned into a regional crisis whose consequences will continue to affect the global energy market. Increasing geopolitical risks and changing energy supply routes have highlighted the need for buyers to diversify their sources. Additionally, the growing demand for electric vehicles in Asia will impact future fuel demand.

Companies are now exploring investments in new production areas such as the Atlantic, Africa, and Asia. This shift in approach has become necessary due to recent market disruptions and rising production costs. However, maintaining the profitability of new projects in a future likely to face lower prices remains the main challenge for the industry.
