Natural gas futures prices surged during the trading period from September 9 to 16, 2023, due to record temperatures this month. The high September temperatures caused electricity consumption to remain at summer levels, resulting in natural gas injections significantly below seasonal levels.

Temperature Conditions and Their Impact on Energy Consumption

In September 2023, high recorded temperatures in the southern United States kept natural gas consumption for electricity generation at summer levels. This situation led to a significant increase in demand for natural gas compared to previous years. Meanwhile, market analysts believe that if this trend continues, natural gas futures prices are likely to see further increases in the coming months.

Decrease in Gas Storage Injections

In addition to rising demand, injections into natural gas storage also significantly decreased, reaching the lowest seasonal levels. According to published data, the amount of injections compared to previous years was about 20 percent lower. This reduction in injections could lead to price increases in the near future and affect the market.

Analysts believe that given the ongoing heat and high demand, we are likely to witness significant price volatility. Particularly, if the high September temperatures continue into October, it can be expected that natural gas futures prices will remain under upward pressure.
